C.P. rallies in the seventh to edge Chesterton
CROWN POINT | When the count got to 3-0, Tim Mummery was hoping for the green light from Steve Strayer.
The Crown Point coach gave his second baseman the hit sign, and his confidence was rewarded. Mummery lined a two-out single into right center to score Ben Kozlowski, giving the Times No. 1 Bulldogs (6-0, 3-0) a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over No. 3 Chesterton (4-2, 2-1) in a clash of Duneland Athletic Conference favorites Monday.
"I knew if it wasn't over the middle of the plate, I wasn't going to swing," Mummery said. "I was sitting fastball the entire time."
Mummery got what he was looking for from Sean Green. The hard-luck loser was nasty for six innings before things unraveled, starting with Nick Hladek's deep drive to center that glanced off Zack Novak's glove for three bases.
"Sean pitched great," Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. "The hardest ball to catch is the one hit straight at you. Those things happen."
Hladek scored when pinch hitter Vince Dawson slipped a one-out grounder past a drawn-in Matt Bailey at shortstop.
"Vince has come up with big hits in the past," Strayer said. "He's been sick, so he's been in and out of the lineup. Obviously, he's going to be back in the lineup."
Mike Kozlowski, who was lifted for Dawson, re-entered, and promptly stole second. Green wheeled to pick off Kozlowski at second, but his throw trickled away, allowing him to go to third.
"Leaving (first) early was not the plan," Strayer said. "He probably caught (Green) off guard a little bit. I know he caught me off guard."
It proved costly when Mummery delivered his game-winner.
"When a guy's leaving early, somebody's got to be (at second), waiting on the ball," Campbell said.
Green fanned nine, many on a sweeping breaking ball. Saroff whiffed just two, but yielded only three hits, none after the third inning. Novak doubled in Chesterton's sole run in the first.
"They hit me hard in the first, so I went off speed," Saroff said. "Usually I get a bunch of strikeouts, but ground balls are just as good."
