Mustang junior remains unbeaten, advances to semis
Music is the main motivator for Mary Hill. Her iPod goes through more batteries than the Energizer Bunny.
Maybe she should add Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" to her repertoire.
The Munster junior remained undefeated and advanced to Saturday's state semifinals with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Penn's JoHanna Manningham (24-3) on Friday at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
Hill had played Manningham earlier this season, when Munster defeated Penn 5-0 on May 10. Hill defeated Manningham that day, 6-1, 6-1.
"I remember she liked to hit a lot of angles," Hill said. "I replayed in my head as much of the match as I could, and I thought I was pretty well prepared today."
This is Hill's first trip to the individual postseason, having played No. 2 singles her first two years.
"The atmosphere is a little more relaxed than it was last week (for team finals)," Hill said. "There are less fans for the individual matches, so it feels a little different."
Hill is now 26-0 this season and 78-0 in her high school career. She will play at 9 a.m. today (Region time) in the semifinals against Caroline Hedrick (23-0) of Columbus North. Hill has never played Hedrick.
"I have never seen her, in school or USTA matches," Hill said. "So I guess that works equally for both of us, because she's never seen me."
The finals are set for 1 p.m. (Region time). Both matches are at North Central High School.
In doubles action Friday, Michigan City's duo of Jayme McCormick and Lindsey Applegate lost to North Central 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinal round.
