McGee, Novak tally five points apiece in exhibition
MARION | It all started on a bad note. And the tune didn't get much better as the night wore on.
Lew Wallace forward Damion McGee arrived 45 minutes late for his pregame practice with the Indiana Junior All-Stars. Chesterton coach Tom Peller, who is the Juniors' head coach, didn't have an explanation.
"He said that his mom got lost," Peller said.
Then, once the game started at the Bill Green Arena in Marion, things didn't get much better in the first half in the exhibition game against the Indiana All-Stars, who beat the Juniors 114-83.
With 3:07 left in the first half, McGee missed a dunk. He then ran downcourt and fouled Gordon Hayward, who scored on the layup. But with 12:26 left in the game, McGee slammed down a dunk that got the crowd going.
And in the final minute, he nailed a 23-foot 3-pointer.
"It was real nice," said McGee, who finished with five points and two rebounds. "I can't wait to come back next year (with the Indiana All-Stars)."
McGee plays on the same SYF AAU team as Marion's Scott Wood, which prompted West Side coach John Boyd, who is an Indiana All-Stars assistant coach, to wonder: "Why didn't he call (Wood) and get the directions?"
Chesterton's Zack Novak struggled some in the first half for the Indiana All-Stars. While Novak was going up for a dunk, one of the Junior guards came in and stripped him of the ball. He was taken out of the game on the next possession and left the court hitting his chest with his fist.
The Michigan-bound guard and Times Player of the Year finished with five points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist.
"I'm not used to coming off the bench," Novak said. "It's kind of hard to get it going. If we play harder we'll do better and that's what we've got to do on Friday."
The Indiana All-Stars will play Kentucky's stars on Friday night at Conseco Fieldhouse, then travel to the Blue Grass State and play them at the Louisville Gardens on Sunday.
North Carolina-bound Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller of Washington dominated the game, scoring 28 points and grabbing nine boards. Four other seniors scored in double digits, and the All-Stars outrebounded the Juniors 57-31.
"We wanted our guys to respect the game and get the All-Stars ready for Kentucky," Peller said. "They've got a tremendous team with a lot of talent."
Wood led the Juniors with 20 points on his home court.
