Mt. Carmel Foundation to award alumni

The Mount Carmel Foundation will present "Salute to the Champions" to honor coaches, players and heroes of Mt. Carmel athletic teams of yesteryear. The event will take place on Dec. 1 at Hawthorne Race Course, 3501 S. Laramie, Cicero.

The "Man in the Arena" awards will be presented to Brian Hurry, M.C. baseball coach; Brian McDonough, All-American lineman for the 1980 state championship team; Tom Kurow, former M.C. hockey coach Tom Kurow, who led the Caravan to three state and nine Kennedy Cup championships; the late Bernie O'Brien, former M.C. football player who later coached at Chicago Vocation High School; Jasper Strong, former M.C. football player now coaching at Thornridge High School; Tony Romano, M.C. freshman football coach for the last 25 years ... also a Chicago fireman; and former M.C. football players Gene Penman, Tim Tumpan, Tom Gibbs, David Lewis, Paul Sheedy, David Novosel, Charlie Haffner, Bob Gavin and Mike Gavin.

Awards will be presented at 12:30 p.m. Buffet is from 12 to 3 p.m. The cost is $50, which included racing program, buffet and door prizes. Checks should be made payable to M.C. Foundation, attn: Jim Civik, Mount Carmel High School, 6410 S. Dante Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60637.

Basketball tourney at new center

Junior high and high school-aged kids are invited to participate in a 3-on-3 co-ed basketball tournament this Saturday at South Holland's new Faith, Future, Future Center, 16931 South Park Ave. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $5 per player, or free with a FFF Center membership, which is available for South Holland residents at an annual fee of $10.

Basketball turkey shoot at Sandridge

Calumet Memorial Park District's annual basketball Turkey Shoot will be held on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sandridge Center, 600 Oglesby, Calumet City. Boys, girls and family divisions will compete for holiday prizes, including frozen turkeys, by participating in free throw and hot spot contests. The competition is free.

Wado-Ki Karate offered bu CMPD

The next session of Wado-Ki Karate will be offered by the Calumet Memorial Park District on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. from Nov. 21 through Jan. 16. The program is for ages 4 to adult. The fee is $35 per participant. Advanced registration is required and is being taken at the Memorial Park Recreation Office, 612 Wentworth, Calumet City.

Catching camp at South Suburban

The South Suburban College baseball team and head coach Steve Ruzich will hold a catching camp on Dec. 26 and 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. for boys ages 8-18. The camp will include techniques for blocking, calling a game, pick-offs, throwing, stance and football, drills for practice, pop ups and handling pitchers.

All players should bring their glove/gear, and should were baseball or sweat pants and gym shoes. All players must wear cups. The cost is $95 per camper.
