Duke trumps Michigan; UCLA survives scare
Sasha Kaun scored the first six points in a 24-1 first-half run that sent No. 3 Kansas soaring past DePaul 84-66 on Saturday.
Mario Chalmers had 12 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and seven assists for the Jayhawks (9-0).
Dar Tucker, who had 18 points, hit a basket with 11:12 left in the half and a few seconds later Karron Clarke's two free throws gave the Blue Demons (2-3) a 13-12 lead. But DePaul did not get another field goal until Will Walker scored with 1:38 left and by then the Jayhawks had mounted a 36-15 lead en route to the 14th 9-0 start in school history.
No. 4 Texas 80, Rice 54: A.J. Abrams, D.J. Augustin and Damion James scored 18 points each to help Texas improve to 9-0 for first time since the 1981-82 season.
No. 6 Duke 95, Michigan 67: Taylor King scored 18 points and fellow freshman Nolan Smith added a career-high 17 for Duke.
Gerald Henderson had 12 points and DeMarcus Nelson and Jon Scheyer added 10 apiece for the Blue Devils (9-0), who took control with a 14-0 run in the first half.
Duke opened with nine straight victories for the third time in four years, won its NCAA-best 56th straight nonconference home game and improved to 3-0 against the Big Ten by sending the shorthanded Wolverines (3-6) to their sixth loss in seven games.
No. 7 UCLA 75, Davidson 63: Luc Richard Mbah a Moute scored 21 points and UCLA made up an 18-point deficit to win in the John Wooden Classic.
The Bruins (8-1) joined No. 1 North Carolina and Duke, then ranked seventh, as powerhouse programs that got a scare from mid-major Davidson. The Wildcats (3-5) lost by a combined 10 points to the two ACC schools, and had UCLA down by as many as 18 points in the first half.
No. 9 Michigan St. 68, No. 20 BYU 61: Drew Neitzel scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half as Michigan State rallied to win its fifth straight.
Goran Suton had 12 points and 13 rebounds and Raymar Morgan scored 17 points for Michigan State (8-1), which was 16-for-24 from the field in the second half and quickly overcame a 10-point halftime deficit.
No. 11 Marquette 81, Wisconsin 76: Dominic James scored 20 points and Marquette ended Wisconsin's 28-home game winning streak, the third-longest in Division I.
Marquette (6-1) won for the third in its last 10 meetings with its in-state rival and won at Wisconsin (6-2) for the first time since 1997.
No. 12 Pittsburgh 75, Washington 74: Justin Dentmon's runner in the lane as the buzzer sounded was disallowed after a lengthy review, and Pittsburgh held on.
Dayton 70, No. 14 Louisville 65: Brian Roberts scored 28 points for Dayton, which spoiled Rick Pitino's bid to become the 17th active Division I coach with 500 victories.
Dayton (7-1) won its sixth consecutive game and beat the Cardinals for the second straight year.
Derrick Caracter had 16 points and seven rebounds and Earl Clark had 15 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks for Louisville (5-2).
No. 16 Texas A&M 109, Texas State 73: DeAndre Jordan and Donald Sloan scored 18 points each and Texas A&M bounced back from its first loss with an easy victory over Texas State.
Joseph Jones had 12 points and seven rebounds and Josh Carter added 12 points and five boards for the Aggies (8-1), who've won 40 consecutive nonconference home games and 29 of their last 30 home games overall.
No. 17 Gonzaga 85, Cal State Northridge 59: Micah Downs scored 19 points and Gonzaga recovered from its worst offensive performance in a decade to whip Cal State Northridge.
Matt Bouldin added 18 points and Abdullahi Kuso had 11 rebounds for Gonzaga (8-2), which improved to 43-2 at the McCarthey Athletic Center since it opened in 2004.
No. 19 Oregon 75, Utah 64: Bryce Taylor scored a season-high 20 points for Oregon at the annual Pape Jam at the Rose Garden.
Tajuan Porter had 16 points and Maarty Leunen and Joevan Catron (Thornton) both added 11 for the Ducks (7-1). The win was the 200th at Oregon for coach Ernie Kent, who is second on the school's all-time win list, 12 behind Howard Hobson.
No. 22 Arizona 78, Illinois 72, OT: Freshman Jerryd Bayless made six free throws in the final 31 seconds of overtime for Arizona two days after Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson announced he would not return to the Wildcats this season.
Jordan Hill had 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Wildcats (6-2), while Bayless had 20 points. The overtime free throws were Bayless' only attempts of the game.
Shaun Pruitt had 24 points and nine rebounds and Trent Meacham had 16 points for Illinois (5-3), which finished 10-of-22 from the free throw line.
