Lasowski's arm, Colvin's bat spark Illiana past Sandburg in baseball

Shane Colvin's two-out single in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference as Times No. 2 Illiana Christian beat Sandburg 3-2 in nonconference baseball on Wednesday.

The single drove in Braden Kapteyn to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.

Starter Kevin Lasowski (7-1) pitched six scoreless innings, striking out six. With a runner on second and Illiana holding a 3-1 lead, Kapteyn came in and hit the first batter he faced. The next Eagles batter hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Kapteyn then struck out the last two hitters.

Kapteyn and Casey Mast had two hits. Colvin and Jent Botterman had an RBI each for the Vikings (23-3).

The Vikings scored twice in the fourth when Kapteyn led off with a single. One out later Lasowski singled then Mast singled in Kapteyn. Botterman singled in Lasowski. Sandburg is 21-5.

Crete-Monee 10, Homewood-Flossmoor 6: Joe Verbeke's single highlighted a three-run sixth inning to give the Warriors the lead in the nonconference win over the Vikings.

Trailing 5-0, Crete-Monee scored four in the fifth and three in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Alan Boles had three doubles and Bryan Burda had three hits and two RBIs for Crete-Monee (20-7).

Alan Glagola had a double and a homer for Homewood-Flossmoor.

Bremen 6, T.F. North 4: The Meteors (7-21) couldn't hold a four-run lead and committed five errors in a loss to the Braves (13-12).

Albert Galvan and Elijaben Israel had two hits each while Eddie Rodriguez had a double.

Thornridge 5, Hillcrest 3: Marcel Barner struck out nine and only allowed two hits in the Falcons' nonconference win. Kevin Bass had a double, two hits and two RBIs in support of Barner. Larry Sarte added two hits and one RBI in the win for Thornridge (13-9).

Benet Acadmey 7, Marian Catholic 6: Mark Scott was 2-for-3 and a triple, but the Spartans (12-17, 5-13) fell to the Red Wings in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

Brian Padove had a single and scored two runs.

Bishop Noll 10, River Forest 0: Joey Valdez tossed a three-hit shutout as the Warriors (14-10, 10-3) beat the Ingots in the GSSC.

John Mullaney was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mike Perez and Andrew Ramker had two RBIs each.

Softball

Illinois Lutheran 11, Morgan Park Academy 5: Heather Rodriguez and Jen Feely has three hits each as sixth-seeded Illinois Lutheran beat No. 3 seed Morgan Park Academy in one semifinal of the Class 1A Gardner-South Wilmington Regional.

Both also scored two runs each and each had a triple for the Chargers (7-12), who scored eight runs in the top of the fourth to take a 9-3 lead. Ashley Ridgely relieved Rodriguez in the third and struck out four and gave up three hits in 4 1/3 innings for the win.

The Chargers will play Gardner-South Wilmington at 11 a.m. Saturday for the championship.

Mother McAuley 3, T.F. South 0: Jackie McGivern struck out seven to lead the Mighty Macs past the Times No. 3 Rebels (20-6).

South had just two hits in being shut out.

Mother McAuley's Desiree Aramburu was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Washington 9, Kennedy 2: Centrese McGee was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored as the Minutewomen (16-3-1) beat Kennedy in one quarterfinals of the Public League Playoffs.

Winning pitcher Ruby Liptack had a double. Washington will play Ag Science at 5:30 p.m. today at Illinois-Chicago in one semifinal.

Bishop Noll 4, Morton 2: Rachel DeWolf was 2-for-2 while Mehgan Jagieslki had two RBIs to lead the Warriors (13-7) past the Governors (10-13).

Girls Soccer

Marian Catholic 3, Joliet Catholic 1: Mia Cleary's one goal and two assists led the Spartans (13-6) past the Angles in one semifinal of the Class AA Lincoln-Way Central Regional.

Emily Kobel had four saves while Meghan Rockrohr and Patricia Resner had one goal each. The sixth-seeded Spartans play No. 1 seed Lincoln-Way Central at 4:30 p.m. Friday for the championship.

Boys Tennis

Illiana Christian 5, Rich South 0: Derrick Haan and Mike Lytle won in singles as the Vikings beat the Stars.

Winning in doubles were the teams of Stanton Huizenga and Tyler VanKuiken; Jay Zandstra and Josh Berbsma, and Derrick Gladstone and Mick Johnson as Illiana Christian won all matches in straight sets.

White named Thornridge coach: The District 205 school board officially named Keith White as Thornridge boys basketball coach at its Wednesday meeting.

It was first reported in the Times on Tuesday that White, who was the girls coach last year, would be named to the position.

Walsh to Benedictine. Marian Catholic girls basketball forward Tracey Walsh will continue her college career at Benedictine in Lisle.
