Bishop Noll boys defeat Roosevelt in overtime

On Tuesday morning, the Hammond Baptist boys basketball team attended the funeral of Amanda Vignere, the 16-year-old Cedar Lake girl who was killed in a skiing accident in Michigan last Thursday. Four members of the Swordsmen team -- Ed Young, Chuck Condict, Stephen Goodall and Britt Harrell were in a singing group with Vignere, a Hammond Baptist junior, and were also on the trip to Michigan.

The team voted to play Tuesday night's game at Quentin Road Christian in Lake Zurich, and the players dedicated the game -- a 42-33 victory -- to Vignere.

Young had a team-high 12 points and 12 rebounds and was the only Hammond Baptist (18-2) player in double-figure scoring.

Morton 44, Calumet 39: Shevin Williams scored 19 points and Cory Phillips added 12 as the Governors (5-4) won their fourth straight game, slipping past the host Warriors (3-4), who suffered their third consecutive defeat.

Aaron Abram led Calumet with 13 points.

Lake Central 43, Highland 40: Keith Thompson's 15 points and 12 from both Kyle Scheffel and Zak Felton led the Indians (7-4) to a win over the Trojans (1-9). L.C. was without 6-foot-8 center Eric Summers, who is sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Scott Blazek and Keith Mahler led Highland with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Bishop Noll 51, Roosevelt 47, OT: The host Warriors (6-4) outscored Roosevelt (2-4) in the OT, 11-7, as Kris Wilson led the winners with 26 points.

Noll shot 30 free throws to 14 for the Panthers, who got 11 points from both Jamaiel White and Marcel Jones.

Girls Basketball

Wirt 56, Clark 30: Aleshia Ramer had 16 points and Kyra Monroe added 12 to go with 15 rebounds as the host Troopers (4-8) put Clark (4-9) away early with a 34-20 halftime deficit.

Vicky Campos led the Pioneers with 13 points.

Hebron 64, Whiting 50: Kelli Matheny scored a game-high 22 points for the visiting Hawks (7-7), who prevailed despite missing 10 free throws at Whiting (7-6). Molly Marshall added 10 points for Hebron.

Emily Gazda's scored a team-high 19 points for the Oilers. Adi Cruz added 18 for Whiting.

Merrillville 61, Lowell 20: Raveen Murray scored 13 points, Tierra Turner added 12 and Bryonna Davis had 10 as the Pirates (8-6) rolled over the visiting Red Devils (1-12), who trailed 28-8 at halftime. Melanee Stubbs added eight points, 10 rebounds and six steals for Merrillville.

Mallory Lampa led Lowell with seven points.

Boone Grove 60, Lake Station 17: Emily Strilich's 19 points and 14 rebounds powered the Wolves over the Eagles (0-12).

Brittany Shaffer backed Strilich with 14 points and six steals, and Kelly Dobson contributed nine points and nine rebounds for Boone (10-4).

Stephanie Pepoff and Joanne Snee scored six points apiece for Lake Station.

Prep Basketball

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association released its first Pacers Male High School Players of the Week and Fever Female Players of the Week on Monday.

Hobart's Bobby James won the North District 1 award after scoring 22 points and tipping in the game-winner against Griffith, giving his team a 79-77 overtime victory.

Valparaiso's Stefanie Lang shared the District 1 award with South Bend Washington's Skylar Diggins. Lang scored 23 points and had 19 rebounds in the Vikings' 55-52 overtime loss against Michigan City.

The other IBCA award winners were Center Grove's Jared Hawkins in the Central District and Terre Haute South's Jake Odum, Bloomington South's Dee Davis and Whiteland's Michael Kirkham in the South. The Fever awards went to Heritage Christian's Kelly Farris in the Central, and Mooresville's Maegan Calloway and Indian Creek's Kylee Hamilton in the South.
