Oilers kick return specialist preparing for Culver Community
WHITING | With a lack of personnel at several schools throughout the Region, some coaches don't really emphasize special teams as an important part of a football game.
Don't tell that to Whiting coach Jeff Cain, though, because special teams helped the Oilers defeat South Central 14-12 in a Class A Sectional 33 semifinal this past Friday. With the win, Whiting earned a berth in its first sectional title game since 2005.
The Oilers (7-4) blocked a field-goal attempt, an extra-point try, and junior wide receiver Juwan Simmons had a 73-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to help lead Whiting, which will host Culver Community (7-4) Friday night at Ray P. Gallivan Stadium.
"We put in special teams packages during the first week," Cain said. "We also practice it four or five times a week because it can change the outcome of a game like it did last Friday."
Simmons is no stranger to scoring on returns. He has returned three kickoffs for touchdowns this season.
"Special teams is important because it can be a game-changer," said Simmons, who also leads Whiting with 42 catches for 814 yards and 10 total touchdowns. "I want to take one back every time I touch the ball."
After South Central took a 12-7 lead late in the second quarter, Simmons took the wind out of the Satellites' sails with his long kickoff return, which ultimately won the game for the Oilers, who are seeking their first sectional title since 1997.
Cain even admits he was shocked that Simmons was kicked to during a playoff game.
"I was surprised to say the least because of what he can do in the open field," Cain said of Simmons, who also has a team-leading four interceptions. "Juwan is a playmaker with unlimited athletic potential and we are blessed to have such a great athlete."
Even though Simmons has ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds, he acknowledges that he couldn't return kicks alone because he needs good blocking just like everyone else. He also knows the Oilers need to be sharp in every facet to beat Culver Community.
"We have a good coaching staff that does a good job of preparing us for all parts of the game," Simmons said. "I also play with a good group of guys that have opened up holes for me all year, and we have to have a good week of practice and execute to beat Culver."
