CANTON, Ohio | E.C. Central grad Matthew Page and Team USA are one win away from claiming the title at the 2009 IFAF Junior World Championship.
The Americans face Canada in today's championship game at Fawcett Stadium.
Page, an offensive lineman, and the U.S. squad are coming off a 55-0 victory over Mexico on Wednesday. Page helped teammate David Wilson rush for 146 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Mexico.
"I'm very excited (to be playing the finals)," Page wrote in an e-mail Friday. "The whole experience has been great. I was ecstatic when I learned I was named to this team ... I've improved in all areas by being here."
The U.S., which beat France 78-0 last weekend, also has local product Jordan Lynch, a Mt. Carmel grad who was named a Team USA co-captain. Lynch, a quarterback with the Caravan, has been playing defense with the American squad.
In addition, Mt. Carmel head coach Frank Lenti is Team USA's offensive line coach.
Canada beat Japan 38-35 on Wednesday to reach the championship game.
"I'm excited for kickoff," Lynch wrote in an e-mail Friday. "With Canada ranked No. 1 and us No. 2, these are the best two national teams in the world and it doesn't get better than that.
"I'm going to remember this entire experience. My teammates -- they've become my friends -- I'll miss going out to practice and just having fun playing the game."
