L.C.'s Polus, Doreski provide offensive firepower in rout
CRAWFORDSVILLE | Brooke Polus and Ashley Doreski may not have lined up on the same soccer field in more than three weeks, but it certainly didn't look like it on Saturday.
The Lake Central seniors both recorded a goal and an assist, providing the 4A West girls squad all the offensive firepower it needed in downing the 4A East team 6-1 in Saturday's first-ever PostYourT.org East-West All-Star games.
Polus, who received MVP honors in the game, also saw action at goalkeeper, but it was her offense that stood out. Polus got the West team on the board with a goal in the 26th minute, starting an offensive barrage of four girls in less than 13 minutes. The familiarity of playing alongside Doreski was an added bonus.
"It was obviously a big help playing with someone you've played with all year, let alone when we were younger," Polus said. "I was kind of surprised (receiving MVP). I definitely didn't expect it, but it feels good. It was fun, and I'm glad I got to play both the field and in goal."
Doreski's goal in the 29th minute gave the West team a 2-0 lead. Polus and Doreski's performances earned the praises of L.C. coach Lori Moore-Smith, who served as the West team's coach. L.C.'s Kaley Marcinak also contributed an assist.
"It was a nice thing to see my players excelling and standing out," Moore-Smith said. "It was definitely a huge compliment, not only to Brooke, but also to Lake Central.
"Overall, they were all a great group of girls who were a lot of fun to coach."
Defensively, the West team was able to shut down an undermanned East team, who were unable to substitute due to having the minimum 11 players on the roster.
Chesterton's Shay Masterson helped lead a West defense that made just one key mistake, a foul leading to a successful East penalty kick by Sarah Keevil midway through the second half.
"I felt we all did pretty well (on defense) and played well overall," Masterson said. "It was a lot of fun, and it was a good honor to be out there."
