Former Andrean, VU star stays ultra busy
Jamie Gutowski has a busy schedule, but she's loving every minute of it.
Gutowski is the coordinator of athletics/activities for Purdue North Central and likes the environment as much as she likes keeping on the go.
"I just really like the college setting and being around student-athletes," Gutowski said. "Athletics has been a big part of my life and I am still active in the college life.
"I love the people I work with, and that also makes it a lot of fun."
A three-sport athlete at Andrean and a four-year letterwinner on the Valparaiso University women's basketball team, Gutowski always has been around sports. Her father, Dennis, is a former Andrean star athlete who played football at Notre Dame. He is an assistant football coach with the 59ers. Her mother, Laurie, teaches physical education at Andrean. Her brothers Tim and Jeff were standout football and baseball players for the 59ers.
Gutowski has a bachelor's degree in communications from Valparaiso and a master's in sports management. While in graduate school, she served as a graduate assistant for the Crusaders. She is a varsity assistant girls basketball coach at Andrean.
Gutowski said she likes the idea of not just doing one job and sitting in one place all day.
"I get to work with a lot of different people on a lot of different projects," she said. "I work with intramurals or with fundraising.
"I do not have a set schedule and I like it like that."
One day last week, Gutowski was in meetings for most of the day, then worked a Panthers women's volleyball game the same evening.
"Hey, I got to work a volleyball game and watch it," Gutowski said. "Not a lot of people can say they can watch a sporting event as part of their job."
Gutowski is also involved with fundraising as the school has a golf outing this month. She also has written PNC sports news releases.
Gutowski noted she is looking forward to moving up as a varsity assistant to Ken Markfull at Andrean.
"It is special because that is where I played, and Andrean meant so much to me," Gutowski said. "I wanted to stay in coaching, and Coach Markfull needed an assistant.
"He was one of the reasons I came to Andrean, and the girls (basketball players) are one of the reasons I stayed there (as a coach)."
