News and notes
Aaron doesn't plan to celebrate if Bonds breaks record: Hank Aaron doesn't plan to be at the ballpark if and when Barry Bonds breaks his home run record.
"Uh-uh. No, no. I'm not going to be around," Aaron was quoted as saying in Tuesday's editions of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Bonds has 735 homers, 20 short of Aaron's career record. While Aaron has declined most interview requests in recent months, he spoke with Journal-Constitution columnist Terence Moore.
"I'd probably fly to West Palm Beach to play golf," Aaron was quoted as saying in Moore's column. "Again, it has nothing to do with anybody, other than I had enough of it. I don't want to be around that sort of thing anymore. I just want to be at peace with myself. I don't want to answer questions. It's going to be a no-win situation for me anyway. If I go, people are going to say, `Well, he went because of this.' If I don't go, they'll say whatever. I'll just let them make their own mind up."
Tuesday's AL games
Indians 7, Angels 6: Cleveland superfan John Adams pounded out his familiar drum beat in the Miller Park concourse, and curious Milwaukee baseball fans showed up to politely root, root, root for their adopted home team as Cleveland beat the Angels.
After sitting through a weekend's worth of snow without playing a game that counted, the Indians finally got to play a home opener of sorts -- under a retractable roof some 450 miles away from Jacobs Field.
The Indians' three-game series against the Angels was moved to Milwaukee after a spring storm dumped more than a foot of snow on Cleveland and wiped out four scheduled games against the Seattle Mariners.
Rangers 12, Devil Rays 9: Texas' Frank Catalanotto hit a three-run homer in a seven-run third inning.
East Chicago native Kenny Lofton reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with a homer, three runs scored and three RBIs.
Royals 6, Blue Jays 3: Alex Gordon hit his first career home run as Kansas City stopped a three-game losing streak.
Gordon was hitless in 13 at-bats and 1-for-24 (.042) this season when the rookie hit a two-run homer in the sixth against Josh Towers (0-1) that boosted Kansas City's lead to 4-1.
Tigers 3, Orioles 1: Nate Robertson (2-0) allowed no runs and four hits, struck out five and walked one in 7 1/3 innings.
Yankees 10, Twins 1: Alex Rodriguez homered in his fourth straight game to back a solid performance from Andy Pettitte.
Red Sox 14, Mariners 3: Jason Varitek and Kevin Youkilis each had three of Boston's 14 hits, and J.D. Drew homered in his first official Red Sox at-bat at Fenway Park.
Tuesday's NL games
Braves 8, Nationals 0: Tim Hudson pitched three-hit ball over seven innings and Jeff Francouer drove in five runs to extend the hapless Nationals' losing streak to five.
Cardinals 3, Pirates 2, 12 innings: St. Louis rallied from two runs down in the ninth and Gary Bennett successfully gambled by running on a short fly ball to score the winning run in the 12th inning.
Giants 6, Padres 5: Barry Bonds hit an RBI single and scored a run, and the Giants snapped a four-game losing streak.
Diamondbacks 5, Reds 4, 11 innings: Scott Hairston hit the game-winning double off David Weathers in the 11th inning to extend Arizona's winning streak to six games.
Marlins 2, Brewers 2, 10 innings, susp., rain: Before this year, it would have become an official tie game and would have been replayed from the start. Because of the change made during the offseason, it will be resumed Wednesday night in the top of the 11th inning and be followed by the finale of the three-game series.
Dodgers 2, Rockies 1: Russell Martin's sacrifice fly in the eighth drove in Wilson Betemit with the winning run, and Los Angeles won for the fifth time in six games.
