Calling all party people! It’s JoJo’s birthday, and everyone is invited. The friendly, furry Jewel-Osco mascot arrived on the scene in 2017, making pop-up appearances to welcome shoppers of all ages to store locations across the Chicagoland region.
Since then, customers have come to know and love the adorable red cyclops character.
In tandem with Jewel-Osco’s 125th anniversary this year, JoJo is celebrating a birthday this fall with a family-friendly event at the Lincoln Park Zoo’s Main Mall on Sunday, Sept. 1. The festivities kick off at 11 a.m. and continue through 4 p.m. with free swag bags from the Jewel-Osco Street Team, a food truck, product sampling, vibrant art installation and music from Chris Petlak of 101.9FM The MIX.
A sponsored lineup of live entertainment promises to delight guests of all ages with offerings like tightrope walkers, jugglers, German wheel performers, caricature artists, face painting and much more. And some of the Windy City’s most recognizable sports mascots will be on hand to keep JoJo company.
Don’t miss the highlight of the party when guests gather around the stage to sing happy birthday to JoJo at 1:25 p.m. followed by cupcakes and special prize bag distribution from the Jewel-Osco Street Team. One of Chicago’s most iconic destinations for family fun, the Lincoln Park Zoo makes a perfect setting to celebrate the city’s beloved hometown grocery-pharmacy franchise. It all started back in 1899 when Frank Ross teamed up with his brother-in-law Frank Skiff to start delivering coffee and tea to customers using a horse-drawn wagon. Over the next few decades, the Jewel Tea Company evolved into Jewel Food Stores thanks to a series of grocery and supply chain acquisitions, later merging with Chicago-based Osco Drugs in the 1960s.
