St. Xavier University is celebrating 180 years this fall.
“Mercy tradition, mission-focused, student-centered learning environment and commitment to a transformative education that produces career-ready graduates who approach their futures with purpose make it a trusted and respected institution in the Southland,” says Breeanna Villalpando, director of marketing and communication projects.
Known for its close-knit community, faculty and staff collaborate each day in support of student success by providing high-quality instruction, mentorship and encouragement.
“Each person contributes to the sense of hospitality and respect that reflects SXU’s Mercy values,” says Villalpando. “St. Xavier boasts many accolades related to the work of its staff, including No. 3 Best College Food in Illinois, among the Safest College Campuses in Illinois and the No 2. Best Value College in Illinois.”
Officials at St. George School know the school is small. But they also think big.
“We may be a small school, but we have a big heart, strong academics, wonderful traditions and an amazing school community. St. George truly is a place where children can learn, grow, and belong,” says Principal Charlotte Pratl. “There is so much to be proud of at St. George School and preschool. Our school is a special place where faith, learning and family come together every day.”
Pratl cites the staff in nurturing students.
“From our youngest preschool students through our eighth graders, our children are known, loved, challenged and encouraged to grow academically and spiritually,” she says.
“Our dedicated teachers create classrooms filled with learning, kindness and excitement, while our strong Catholic identity reminds us to put Christ at the center of all we do."
Offering more than an education, Providence works at developing the whole person academically, spiritually, socially and personally.
“Our students are challenged in the classroom, but they are also encouraged to discover their talents, develop their faith, serve others, become leaders and find a place where they belong,” says Allison Rios, director of communications. “There is a genuine sense of community here.
“Students are known here,” continues Rios. “They aren't simply a name on a roster or a number in a classroom. Teachers, counselors, coaches, moderators and staff build relationships with students, celebrate their accomplishments and support them when they struggle. It takes everyone working toward the same goal to create a place where students feel welcomed, supported, safe and valued.”
With the mission statement of providing a safe and nurturing community, one that fosters personal and academic excellence, Summit Hill also encourages students and staff to treat one another with dignity, to respect the school environment, embrace diversity and develop the type of character that merits trust and honor. To achieve these goals, positive risk taking and perseverance are encouraged.
With 2,500 students Summit Hill, has a 14:1 student/teacher ratio, with the students provided a dedicated digital device.
“Every single person matters and we are a family,” says Andrew principal, Dr. Abir Othman. “A school does not become exceptional because of one group of people. It happens because everyone understands that their role contributes to the student experience.”
That’s why, continues Othman, the teachers challenge students academically while building relationships with them, and counselors, deans, aides and support staff help students navigate challenges and provide needed resources.
“Our office staff are often the first and last people families interact with and help keep our school running every day. Our custodians and food-service staff create environments where students feel cared for and welcomed. Our parents and community partners are an important part of the Andrew family. Student success is strongest when school, home, and community are working together," says Othman.
IBEW-NECA Technical Institute, sponsored by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 134 and the National Electrical Contractors Association, is the training arm of the Cook County IBEW and offers a four-year electrical communications apprenticeship and a five-year electrical construction apprenticeship.
“Here at the school, we strive for a culture of excellence that ensures our training turns out the best union journeypersons,” says Gene M. Kent, executive director of the technical institute.
IN-Tech trains journeyperson electricians who possess a broad and deep knowledge of the electrical industry coupled with safety driven mindsets and strong, customer-oriented work ethics.
“The demand for electricians is extremely high right now,” says Kent, noting that the school has more than 2,000 trainees and has received 3,600 applicants in the last six months.
