NIPSCO is committed to delivering value through reliability, modernization and a reinforced commitment to customers as Northwest Indiana expands.
Northwest Indiana is on the move. From advanced manufacturing and logistics to emerging data center investments, the region is growing and changing in ways that promise new opportunities for families, small businesses and industries. Reliable energy is essential to sustaining that momentum. That’s where Northern Indiana Public Service Company LLC (NIPSCO) comes in.
In serving approximately 1.4 million customers across 32 counties in northern Indiana, NIPSCO remains focused on continuing to deliver safe, reliable energy at a reasonable cost. This requires strategic, long-term investments in the areas that matter most, including strengthening natural gas and electric infrastructure and modernizing a workforce capable of supporting the region’s future energy needs.

Value for customers is rooted in the way NIPSCO plans and prioritizes its work as a regulated utility. Through the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) process and collaboration with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), it evaluates future electricity needs, assesses cost-effective options and sequences capital investments to deliver the highest reliability value per dollar.
These long-term planning processes help stabilize costs, support more predictable rate structures and reduce exposure to seasonal and market fluctuations over the long term. By grounding investment decisions in real-world data and evaluation by subject matter experts, consistent with established regulatory frameworks, NIPSCO reinforces its commitment to deliver safe and reliable service at a reasonable cost for customers today and into the future.
In summer 2026, NIPSCO is launching a new electric bill payment assistance program for income-qualified customers, backed by an annual $1.5 million shareholder-funded commitment. The program will:
• Provide direct bill support for income-qualified electric customers;
• Eliminate deposits for income-qualified gas and electric customers; and
• Waive certain reconnection charges for all electric customers.
Alongside this effort, energy assistance programs and billing support continue to be available to customers.
NIPSCO Generation LLC & Data Centers: Enabling Growth While Protecting Customers
Data centers are the digital backbone of today’s economy, supporting cloud computing, AI, ecommerce, streaming and countless essential services. They require round-the-clock reliability and large-scale electric service. Northwest Indiana has become an attractive location for these energy-intensive industries because of its strategic location and proximity to Chicago. Additionally, the area’s strong transmission infrastructure and supportive energy policy poses a real opportunity for communities across NIPSCO’s service area.
NIPSCO’s approach is designed to support growth while protecting customers, ensuring that the costs of serving data centers are not shifted to households and local businesses and that customers can benefit as the region grows.
Nationwide, demand for data centers is rapidly accelerating, driven by growth in AI and cloud services. This surge in development brings substantial electricity needs, underscoring the importance of responsible, forward-looking energy planning. Utilities and industry leaders are collaborating on approaches that ensure major power users contribute appropriately to the cost of new generation and infrastructure, while supporting grid reliability and community benefit.
To responsibly serve these large new loads, NIPSCO established NIPSCO Generation LLC (“NIPSCO GenCo”), a first-in-the-nation regulated affiliate designed to plan, build, own and operate generation dedicated specifically to large load customers. NIPSCO GenCo’s purpose is straightforward: support economic development without shifting costs or financial risk to NIPSCO’s existing customers. By structurally separating the assets and expenses required for large load service from NIPSCO’s traditional retail rate base, NIPSCO GenCo keeps current customers insulated from stranded cost exposure. All transactions between NISPCO GenCo and NIPSCO occur under IURC-approved agreements with regulatory oversight, reinforcing transparency and accountability.
Under this model, large load customers directly fund the generation and transmission built to serve them and compensate the system for their use of existing transmission facilities. As a result, NIPSCO’s other customers do not fund the infrastructure or generation required for data centers. The NIPSCO GenCo model aligns with the Ratepayer Protection Pledge announced by the White House on March 4, 2026, which emphasizes that large load customers should pay the full cost of the power and infrastructure required for their data centers.
The structure also delivers broader customer benefit through an estimated $1 billion in bill credits for NIPSCO customers over 15 years, equal to approximately $80–$108 annually for a typical customer – and this is just for the first large load customer added. With each additional large load customer added, more dollars will flow back to existing customers. NIPSCO GenCo helps NIPSCO add new power in a steady, planned way, which strengthens the grid and improves reliability for customers.
Speed matters to site selectors, so NIPSCO GenCo uses customer-specific contracts that are individually negotiated, regulator-reviewed agreements that balance certainty for large projects with full cost recovery and protections for residential and small business customers. This approach complements NIPSCO’s broader economic development efforts and helps companies evaluate cost savings when deciding to locate in northern Indiana.
Together, these efforts create a consistent model for responsible growth, where economic development, system reliability and customer value align.
A Modernized Workforce
NIPSCO is modernizing how work gets done to better serve northern Indiana customers, support good
local jobs and ensure safe, reliable service for decades to come. As energy demand grows and weather becomes more unpredictable, utilities across the country are updating longstanding practices by adopting new technologies, improving field operations and adapting to how customers expect services to perform.
This modernization includes updating workforce practices to strengthen safety, responsiveness and reliability. These discussions are occurring through routine collective bargaining, approached with respect for the employees who play an essential role in daily operations. NIPSCO’s frontline teams respond during severe weather and emergencies, and their work is vital to keeping communities protected and connected.
To remain dependable and affordable, NIPSCO is adopting proven industry practices that improve efficiency, provide more flexibility during emergencies and support quicker, safer response. The goal is readiness — ensuring the company is prepared for the next storm, outage or emergency. The result is safer operations, faster restoration and a more reliable system for customers.
Generation Transition and Infrastructure Resilience
As NIPSCO transitions to a more modern and diverse energy system, the company is bringing cleaner resources online while continuing to operate some existing units that help ensure reliability during times of high demand. Combined with upgrades to the natural gas and electric systems and new smart technologies, these efforts support a stronger, more resilient system for all NIPSCO customers.
Infrastructure improvements take many forms. From reinforcing substations and upgrading distribution lines to modernizing natural gas facilities and enhancing system monitoring, these upgrades help reduce outages, speed restoration and improve safety across communities. NIPSCO operates a vast energy system, including approximately 18,800 miles of natural gas pipeline, more than 700 miles of gas transmission pipeline, 3,000 circuit miles of electric lines and 4,000 MW of generation capacity, including 3,000 MW of renewable generation. Like roads, bridges and other public systems, a network of this size requires ongoing attention and responsible investment to remain safe, resilient and reliable over time.
Modernization enhances customer experience by preventing issues before they occur, reducing disruptions and helping manage long-term costs. Energy efficiency and demand side programs give homes and businesses tools to manage usage and support the region’s economic competitiveness.
As northern Indiana grows, a strong, adaptable energy system ensures communities and businesses can rely on safe, dependable service. Through thoughtful planning and regulatory oversight, NIPSCO balances reliability, sustainability and affordability to meet today’s needs while preparing the region for tomorrow.
