In this month's episode of Ask the Expert, certified nurse midwife, Sharon Greiner discusses the importance of routine cervical screenings, what to expect during a screening, and what measures you can take to prevent cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer among American women in the mid-1970s. Since then, the cervical cancer death rate has dropped by more than half because of screenings and prevention. Still, each year about 13,000 new cases will be diagnosed and about 4,000 women will die of cervical cancer. It is most frequently diagnosed between the ages of 35 and 64, with the average age being 50. This is why routine cervical cancer screenings are so important for early detection and treatment.
