Owner Mark Kratkoczki said Crown Antique Mall has been connecting customers with the charm and character of vintage and antique goods since 2019.
“We offer antiques and vintage items, including furniture, home décor, collectibles and treasures from various eras,” said Kratkoczki. “Our dedication to providing high-quality, unique items, combined with our passion for antiques, resonates with our customers and keeps them coming back.”
The mall features two large vendor warehouses offering unique products and hosting events such as celebrity meet-and-greets, seasonal markets, car shows, holiday celebrations and customer appreciation days.
Kratkoczki says the strong team and supportive vendor community are focused on service and a welcoming atmosphere.
“We are truly honored to win first place in the Best of the Region 2025, making it our sixth consecutive win. This reflects the hard work of our dedicated employees and the loyalty of our wonderful customers and vendors, making it something I am truly grateful for and proud of,” Kratkoczki said. “We look forward to continuing to serve our community and sharing our love for antiques with everyone who walks through our doors."

Sisters Loretta Nosal and Brenda Turner have turned into an effective tag-team since owning the shop for the last four years.
But there are close to 75 other reasons the shop is successful: The vendors who sell their wares at Antiques on Main.
“We have some fabulous vendors, and I have to give credit to them first,” Turner said. “They have great products.
“We also like to make it a welcoming environment. We will chit-chat with people and say ‘hello.’ It’s just a friendly atmosphere, and it’s a happy place where people like to be.
“Every time someone new comes in, they say it’s much bigger than it looks from the outside,” Turner said of the 85,000-square-foot facility.

“We are customer-centered,” Bouquet Jr. said. “That’s our main focus with everything that we do. Everything after that comes after the customer service.

Manager Paul Hodson said that stability is a key to the business, which was started by John Hodson five decades ago.
“We’ve been in the same location for 50 years,” he said. “My father opened the store in 1975, and we have been in the same location ever since.”
But it’s not just a long-standing location that helped make the business stand out.
“Every deal that we do — big or small — it’s all about honesty and integrity,” he said. “It doesn’t matter the size of it.”
Paul Hodson says the shop has long-time customers and is hoping the younger crowd picks up an interest in coin collecting.
“They are starting to,” he said. “When parents come in to collect coins or to buy silver, I always try to get their kids involved. I’ll give them a free silver dime or a free silver quarter. I try to give them a history lesson on the coin. I want to get them interested in things other than social media and things like that.”

Brian and Cathie Mitsch are the owners, and Munster said that having a family-owned business in this area is a strength.

“We are very humbled to be recognized as the Best of the Region in the hardware store category,” says Rob Grill, co-owner of Gus Bock's Ace Hardware. He and his brother Keith purchased the business from their father Keith Grill Sr. in 2006.
What started as the original Gus Bock store in Lansing in 1935 has expanded into northwest Indiana, namely Dyer, Munster, Winfield and Lansing. Great service and a wide selection in all categories attract people to their stores. Its newly upgraded fastener department is best in class. The Dyer store was nominated by Stihl power equipment as the retailer of the year in 2024.

Putting customers first is one of the most notable qualities of Granite Gems.
Anthony Garcia and his wife, Tiffany, started the company in 2019. As Anthony Garcia puts it: “We came out of nowhere, just me and a truck and a third party company.” Since then, they have grown, hired more staff and expanded their showroom with full slabs and more variety of materials.
But it is Garcia's “doing right for the people” belief that makes the customers happy and heard. “We are a family-owned, local business that thinks about what our customers' needs are. We will go the extra mile to make someone happy.” And when their customers show their support in return, it makes them super excited.

A pool is more than just a wet recreational feature. It is often the focal point of your property second to your home. Royal Pools G2 Landscaping creates a backyard oasis.
When Royal Pools and G2 Outdoor Designs merged in 2023, they had a plan.
"One of the biggest problems is having multiple contractors in a backyard, so we wanted to be a one-stop-shop and make it easier for the customer,” said Frank DeBartolo, president of Royal Pools G2 Landscaping. The family-owned pool company combined with the landscaping company owned by the Gunninghams created a service that not only installed pools, but also enhanced the backyard experience. As DeBartolo puts it: “We want to build your forever yard.”
The staff at Royal Pools G2 Landscaping is excited that its loyal followers and clients came out to support it for the Best Pool Store in the Region.

A resale shop such as Restored Resale has many moving parts from donations to sales. Manager Cathy DeFries knows how each important part functions.
“ Our success starts with people. From the moment you walk through our doors, you’re welcomed by some of the friendliest, most passionate volunteers and staff you’ll ever meet.” They contribute to the clean, organized store that showcases high-quality items.
“We are also fortunate to have incredible customers who truly understand what Restored Resale is all about,” DeFries said. Shoppers value bargains as well as the mission to give back as all proceeds benefit DeMotte Christian Schools.
As DeFries sums it up, “It’s the perfect blend of amazing volunteers, dedicated staff, loyal customers, quality merchandise and a whole lot of heart. We’re proud to be more than just a resale shop – we’re a community.”

The unique shopping experience at Barney’s Hub Bootery is only part of the reason it is considered the best in the area.
Yvonne Shofroth and Kim Pappas continue the “sit and fit” process when men, women and children come to their store to buy shoes. “We are not a big box store,” says Shofroth. “We care about our customers and our relationships and how they feel when they come in and leave.”
Once the knowledgeable staff measures the customer’s feet and determines pressure points and other foot needs, they bring out three types of shoes: The ones that were requested, ones that are similar and one that is a surprise that may be even more like what they wanted in footwear.
Barney’s Hub Bootery has loved to serve the community for 75 years and continues to exceed expectations in customer service. As Shofroth explains: “It is because of the customers that the doors are open.”

Thank Dick Stack, an avid fisherman who was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, N.Y., in 1948 when he the store's owner asked him to come up with a list of products to expand to the fishing tackle business. Though the owner was unimpressed with the effort, Stack's grandma saw promise and backed Stack in opening his own store.
Fast forward to the today, as Dick's has grown into a full-line sporting goods store with more than 500 locations.

When a business revolves around people instead of products, customers will come back again and again. Scott’s U-Save Tires & Auto Repair is an example of that kind of business.
Scott’s U-Save started in 1981 in Steger as a two-bay gas station. The family-owned business expanded to offer tire service and auto repair, but it is still known as a destination for tire repair and replacement. In 2019, it opened its first Indiana store in Schererville on U.S. 41.
In June 2024, Scott’s U-Save added a new location in the Region by acquiring Knight Automotive in Crown Point. And just like the first store, its remains committed to a high standard of quality work and customer service.
Brad Templin, operations manager and fourth-generation of the family, says it best: “We have loved being able to better serve Northwest Indiana and increase our presence in Indiana.”

In 2018, sisters Jennifer Buksar and Jessica Myers founded Tobacco Island in Crown Point to create a safe place for their customers to find the products they wanted.
“We have the best value and huge inventory," said Buskar. "We have trained and knowledgeable staff and fight for the rights of our consumers.”
They also have expanded to four stores in Indinan and Illinois with a new location coming.
“We vet our products and get them straight from the manufacturer,” says Buksar. “We value helping others whether it is CBD products to ease pain or products to help quit smoking.” Giving back to the community is also important to them from Heroes Helping Heroes to fulfilling wish lists on an Angel Tree.
But in the end, it is the customers that make it worthwhile. “It’s a family,” Buksar says. “Customers are not customers. We strive to give them a safe, knowledgeable shopping experience.”

For a game experience without electronics or gizmos, Mind Benders in Whiting is the all-ages store .
Joel and Amy Bender are the co-owners who find puzzles and games before they are popular. “We sell brain games, thinking games, logic games, science and engineering games. From ages zero to adults, we have stuff that the big box stores don’t have,” Joel Bender points out. The store offers a wide variety including family games, party games and strategic games, which are growing in popularity.
But Amy Bender explains that they have something that online stores will never have. “I think one element is that they have no experience; they don’t touch it.” Mind Benders holds demos of their games and activities as well as shows their customers how games are played. Joel Bender is confident that when families go home with their new games, “they are ready to play.”
Mind Bender’s Facebook page lists activities and events as well as ways they give back to the community . But by listening to their customers and connecting them to the games, Mind Benders provides patrons with a personal experience that brings them back.

With more than a half century of putting people in cars, the Webb Auto Group, which includes Webb Hyundai, has been a go-to place for Region residents.
Vice President Brian Webb said the family-owned group treats its customers well. The warranty on its cars is like the company betting on itself to succeed.
“We pride ourselves in caring for our customers as if they were our own family,” he said. “We provide many benefits for our customers including free car washes and America's best warranty — a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty.”
Businesses have their challenges and most recent for car dealerships is product shortages.
“We had to adapt to the inventory shortages, however; we now have a large selection of all models to choose from,” Webb said.
