Sisters Brenda Turner and Loretta Nosal co-own Antiques on Main, a 9,000-square-foot mall with more than 70 vendors. Turner has been an owner since 2015, and Nosal joined as a co-owner in 2021.

“We offer a wide variety of merchandise, ranging from furniture, collectibles and home decor to books, candles, soap, and a large assortment of vintage, retro and handcrafted treasures,” said Turner.

The sisters attribute their success to growing up with a family retail business and a father steeped in work ethic and determination.  “In addition, we have an incredible group of vendors who pour their hearts and souls into their beautiful spaces.”

According to Turner and Nosal, they hear from customers thrilled to have “found” their shop and visit with their friends.

“It is just such a positive, fun and creative environment, and we are thankful for the opportunities we have here every day,” said Turner and Nosal.

Willy’s Works Fireworks brings the celebration to Crown Point.

Ricky "Ricochet" Chandler Jr. is the second generation owner of the fireworks business started by his father Ricky Sr., better known as “Willy,” in 1980. “It started out with 10-12 customers attending a tent fireworks stand in front of Jewel marketplace.” Now thousands go to Willy’s for fireworks.

“We engage with customers using words that start with W in fast, tongue-twister-style sayings that get people smiling and laughing,” explains Chandler.

Willy’s Works believes strongly in giving back to the community. “Willy’s Works donates substantially to our fire department, police, and special needs organizations every year. We also host an annual holiday called “Willy Wednesday”. On the last Wednesday in June, they put on a family-friendly community celebration with music, food, and a Willy Wonderful Fireworks show.

They also look forward to getting everyone ready for the 250th birthday of America.

It is the great customer service that makes them a winner in the Region. As Chander puts it: “It’s thanks to you Willy’s Works Works. Without you, we’d be Willy Without Works, and that Willy Wouldn’t Work Well.”

Their knowledge, hard work and genuine care for every customer are what make the experience here so special — and this recognition belongs just as much to them.”

And they are always working to be better. “Behind the scenes, something special is already in motion" Govert says. "It begins this August … and it’s part of a vision we’ve been building toward for years. We’re not ready to share all the details just yet, but 2027 will mark an exciting new chapter — one we can’t wait to share with you.”

For 16 years, Olivezia has been a place of delight for customers looking for specialty items and gourmet foods.

“Olivezia came about in a very organic way. As the owner of Lucrezia Restaurant, we had purchased our building along with the one next door. For a time, that space was rented, but when the tenants moved on, we found ourselves with an empty building — and no desire to become long-term landlords," said owner Nada Karas.

Karas saw on opportunity to complement what she did in hospitality and food — an inviting gourmet market centered on high-quality olive oils, balsamic vinegars, wine, cheese and specialty items.

“We wanted to create more than just a shop. The vision was an experience—something interactive, educational and welcoming, where people could explore new flavors and bring a bit of that experience home”

From the signature Tuscan Herb Extra Virgin Olive Oil to 18-Year Traditional Balsamic Vinegar to gourmet cheeses and boutique wines, you’ll find all you need to elevate your next special occasion or simply turn an ordinary meal into an extraordinary one.

“We cover the main home improvement categories people need most, including kitchens and baths, flooring, windows and doors, moldings and millwork, lumber, siding and decking, and we keep a strong in-stock inventory so customers can move projects forward quickly.”

Customer service and reputation also make Schillings a winner.

“People remember being helped by knowledgeable staff, and they remember when a company follows through,” continues Stump. “We’ve built a strong reputation in Northwest Indiana over many years, and that trust means a lot in a reader-voted award like this.

Schillings was also voted Best Cabinet Shop and Best Customer Service.

Holiday Liquors appears to be a typical corner liquor store in Cedar Lake, where Lake Shore Drive turns into Morse Avenue. But upon walking through the front door, there's more than its 3,300 square feet of spirits.

“Customers often say that it shops like a bigger store," noted owner Brian Kubal.

Holiday Liquors, started by the Kubal family in 1961, has been at its current location since 2005.

“We stock over 600 wines and lots of different bourbons, even hard-to-find brands," Kubal said. "It’s clean, convenient and our customers can get what they need.”

Along with the wine and bourbon, Holiday Liquors has an 18-door cooler ready with beers and non-alcoholic varieties.

“Our employees know the store and are able to help find whatever people need,” Kubal said.

In June, Holiday Liquors holds a customer appreciation day to celebrate the summer with food, drinks and fun.

Sampling also helps with selection. “We do a lot of sampling, especially with new wines.”

Some customers want to reconnect with wines they tried on vacation. “People come in who have been to different areas like Italy or France, and they ask to find a wine from the region they were at,” says Green. With locations in Crown Point, Schererville and Lowell, Tobacco Island continues to expand its footprint across Northwest Indiana.

Operated by sisters Jennifer and Jess Buksar, the business has grown steadily over the past nine years, starting in a 1,100-square-foot space in Crown Point and expanding to a 2,500-square-foot storefront. The newest Lowell location, which opened Oct. 2, combines a retail shop with a cigar lounge.

“Our motto is simple: If we won’t put it in our bodies, we won’t sell it to you,” Jennifer Buksar said.

By purchasing directly from manufacturers, Tobacco Island ensures its products are always genuine and held to a high standard. The shop carries an extensive selection of cigars and accessories, while hosting summer events and welcoming cigar companies into the store.

Staff are trained thoroughly with a focus on long-term growth and development, helping create consistency across all three locations. Tobacco Island also stays active in the community through initiatives like Heroes Helping Heroes, veteran-focused charities, and neighbor discounts—reinforcing its role as more than just a retail shop, but a connected and trusted part of the Region.

Since opening Jan. 10, the independently owned shop that's part of a nationwide network of more than 270 locations has filled a gap in the Region’s retail scene. The shop has offered everything from new sets to retired collections and pre-built creations. It caters to kids and serious collectors, delivering an experience that goes beyond a typical toy store.

“We wanted to create something the Region was missing — an experience where people can come in and really connect with Lego,” said owner Daniel Wagenmaker. With a large, ever-changing inventory, the store offers service that keeps customers coming back.

“At the end of the day, it’s all about the customer experience,” Wagenmaker added, noting the goal is simple: To make every visit enjoyable and memorable for every customer.
