Desserts by Juliette started as a food blog in 2013, leading to a brick-and-mortar store in 2018. Owner Susan Keller credits their success to having a great bakery team who make their customers the top priority.
“Love is the main ingredient is our tag line, and it's also what our customers feel when they visit us and place their orders,” says Keller. “They comment that they feel more like family than a customer.”
Best-selling items include cakes and cupcakes for large and small events. A favorite frosting flavor is their Italian buttercream. Keller says cake flavors such as lemon blueberry, Shamrock pistachio and Reese’s Chocolate Peanut Butter keep their customers coming back.

In business for 14 years, Frank’s Backyard BBQ started with roadside vending at Reichert's Tavern in Brunswick. They opened a brick and mortar location Cedar Lake in 2017. “We outgrew that location and moved to our current building in December of 2019,” said Patricia Schrum, who owns the business with husband, Rob.
“We got started doing roadside because of Rob’s love of cooking smoked meats for family and friends,” said Schrum. “We did this while he was still at his full-time job in the printing industry and with a two-hour commute and 12-hour days, we decided to take a leap of faith and do barbeque full time.”
Brisket burgers are the signature item, made with in-house ground brisket. The brisket and turkey paninis are also popular.
“What sets us apart from other eateries in the Region is our dedication to consistency, quality and customer service," Schrum said, noting that Frank's is all wood fired. “We don't have any ovens, fryers or microwaves, and 95% of our menu is cooked on our four outdoor smokers.”

Cheri Ford wanted to create a special community place where everyone feels welcome. She realized that dream when Old Dog Coffee House opened in 2019.
“Our family enjoys exploring small towns and supporting local businesses. During a visit to Frankenmuth, Mich., we entered an inviting coffee shop and recognized the need for a similar gathering space in Lowell where people could connect and relax,” said Ford.
Old Dog updates its special drink menu every month, featuring seasonal themes and popular flavors. “Our signature menu item is the cold brew, which we prepare in-house using beans sourced from Smugglers Coffee roasters, a local business based in Northwest Indiana,” said Ford.
“Our inviting atmosphere attracts customers. In summer, the patio brims with tables, chairs, flowers and plants for everyone to enjoy. During winter, guests can relax in outdoor greenhouses on sunny days,” she continued. “We also take pride in the consistency of our products. Old Dog employees are trained so that every drink served matches your expectations each time you visit.”
The business is also dedicated to supporting community causes, youth sports and schools.

As a family-operated restaurant since 1948, Schoop’s is deeply rooted in the community. “We care about our employees, our neighbors and serving the freshest, most delicious food possible,” said Lynette Newell, co-owner. “Customers often rave about our welcoming, 1950s-style diner vibe and the personal touch we bring — whether it’s remembering a regular’s order or hosting local fundraisers to benefit our community.
"It’s not just a burger — it’s a place where people feel at home. We have 12 family owned and operated locations throughout the Region.”
The classic cheeseburger is the star of the menu, crafted with fresh ground beef that is hand-formed and seared on the grill.
“All burgers have our signature crispy edge that one customer said should be called the halo, because it’s the closest thing to heaven he’s ever had,” said Newell. “Customers love pairing these with our crispy fries, a Green River or a thick milkshake, which many say completes the classic Schoop’s experience.
“We cannot forget our delicious homemade soups and chili, made fresh daily,” added Newell. Ask for a free soup sample on your next visit.

Boz Hot Dogs serves its own version of a Chicago-style dog — a beef-and-pork hot dog on an unseeded, steamed bun, topped with mustard, sweet relish, diced onions, tomato wedges, cucumber slices, hot or mild peppers and celery salt.
Its freshly cut produce and attention to detail make the experience a step above others. Also on the menu are all-beef jumbo dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, Polish sausages, nachos and homemade sloppy joes, served on a steamed hot dog bun.
After years of owning restaurants in Lansing and Dyer, Bob and Carol Bollacker poured their hearts into making their long-term dream a reality by opening a third location in Schererville in April 2024.
Unfortunately, Bob Bollacker was diagnosed with brain cancer a year later and died last March. “Bob’s legacy will live on through our continued commitment to excellence,” said Carol Bollacker.

A balance of authenticity and quality are the best ingredients for a perfect Mexican food experience that includes a refreshing margarita, according to Oscar Gutierrez, co-owner of Asada Grill & Cantina.
“Asada Grill & Cantina was built from a passion for authentic Mexican cuisine inspired by traditional recipes from all over Mexico, and we combined them with a modern twist,” he said, referring tof co-owners Rigo Gutierrez and Miguel Padilla.
“Our goal is simple — to create a welcoming, family environment where people can enjoy high-quality food, great drinks and feel at home in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Gutierrez.
“We offer a wide variety of margaritas — from classic lime to more elevated options like jalapeño margaritas, fruity flavors and premium tequila-based creations. We also feature specialty margaritas using top-shelf tequilas for a more refined experience.”
The classic house margarita is a top seller—especially on Mondays and Wednesdays when it’s half off. The jalapeño margarita is also a favorite for guests who like a little heat.
“One of our standout signatures is the Black Dahlia margarita, along with our Rey Agave Premium Margarita. They’re unique to us and really represent our modern twist and identity,” said Gutierrez.

Fuzzyline Brewing’s beer and food “are best described as locally sourced and globally inspired,” according to owner Al Robertson. With 12 beers on tap at any given time and a food menu that changes often with rotating weekly specials, the place has wide appeal.

Originally a booth at the Griffith Central Market in 2013, Lady’s Gourmet Popcorn has seen steady growth that necessitated a move to a storefront and most recently a relocation to a larger space.
“We recently moved into the iconic G & G Hobby Shop, which has given us so much more space and a parking lot for our amazing customers,” said Patty Haugh, who owns the business with Amanda Sanow and Carly Haugh. “We are a small family-owned and woman-owned small business.”
You’ll find common flavors, including their top-seller, the “Central Park” mix of cheddar and caramel. There are also a number of unusual flavors. “When you have chefs creating crazy popcorn flavors you get things like Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup, Greek Fries, French Toast and Brisket Mac & Cheese. We are always creating new fun flavors to try,” said Haugh.
The signature flavor is Butter Caramel, developed as a nod to an early flavor called Screaming Yellow Zonkers, an extra buttery blond caramel.
They also make an assortment of hand-crafted sweets including oatmeal cream pies, krispy treats, cake pops and giant butter cookies.
