Andrean’s football team scored 21 points in the first quarter and never looked back, shutting out Highland 42-0 in a Northwest Crossroads Conference game on Friday, Sept. 25, at Andrean High School in Merrillville.
The win was the 59ers’ fifth straight and kept them unbeaten in conference play at 4-0. Andrean is 5-1 overall, with its only loss coming in the season opener at Merrillville on Friday, Aug. 21.
It was also the first shutout of the season for an Andrean defense that has allowed fewer points in each of its last three games, and the defense scored on its own. Junior Colin Watson returned an interception for a touchdown, and junior Javier McCoy added a sack and a blocked punt.
McCoy also ran for a touchdown, one of six different players to score for Andrean. Junior quarterback Dylan Gore missed on just one pass, threw touchdowns to junior Gavin Helpingstine and Tyler Vo, and ran for another score. Senior Ethan Reyna also scored on the ground.
A week earlier, Gore threw three touchdown passes in a 28-10 win that handed Hobart its first loss.
Andrean led 35-0 at halftime. Highland, which fell to 1-5, managed 9 passing yards.
Across four conference games, the 59ers have outscored their opponents 159-30.
Andrean next travels to Guerin Catholic for a nonconference game before closing the regular season against Hanover Central and Lowell.
