Highland’s boys soccer team scored three goals in each half to beat La Porte 6-1 in a nonconference match on Monday, Sept. 28, at Highland High School.
Four of the match’s seven goals came in the first half, and the Trojans led 3-1 at the break. La Porte’s only goal came in the first half, when senior midfielder Abel Owuor scored off an assist from junior striker Alex Turczynski.
Highland took control after the break, adding three more goals in the second half while holding the Slicers scoreless. La Porte junior goalkeeper Isaias Mejia-Palma finished with four saves.
The six goals were a welcome sight for a Highland team that struggled to score early this season. The Trojans opened with four straight one-goal losses, falling 1-0 to Andrean and 2-1 to Hammond Central, Kankakee Valley and Valparaiso, scoring three goals total across those four matches.
Highland’s first win came 3-0 at the Hammond Academy of Science and Technology on Monday, Aug. 31, but the Trojans were then shut out 4-0 by Hanover Central on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Against La Porte, Highland doubled its goal total from that first win.
Highland, which is 1-5 in the Northwest Crossroads Conference, returns to conference play two days later, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Hobart.
