(Gary, Ind.) The Gary SouthShore RailCats started a new series for the second leg of their homestand against the Sioux Falls Canaries. The RailCats entered the game at 37-52 and the Canaries at 44-46 after Gary lost a series to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks the day prior. Dominic Cancellieri started for the RailCats as the Canaries turned to right-hander Chase Gearing.
Korry Howell led off the bottom of the first with a home run to left field to set a new career high. Josh Rehwaldt tied the game in the top of the second on an unearned run charged to Cancellieri. Andy Nelson gave the RailCats the lead back in the next half inning. After two innings, the RailCats led 2-1.
Rehwaldt, in the top of the fourth, hit his 19th home run over the yellow line in center field to even the game at 2. Gary took the lead when Marc Flores smashed a home run over the right-field wall, Joe Suozzi doubled over the head of Joe Vos in center, and Nick Podkul ran home all the way from first. It was RailCats 6 and Canaries 2.
Gary kept attacking by scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth, and Flores in the bottom of the eighth hit his second home run of the night to make it 8-2. The Canaries in the top of the ninth clawed back into the game when Scott Combs belted a two-run home run and Mike Hart had an RBI single. Jacob Coats settled in and struck out Rehwaldt before getting Jabari Henry to ground out to short to give the RailCats an opening win in the series. The final was 8-6 from the Steel Yard.
The RailCats matched their win total from last year, improving to 38-52, while the Canaries fell to 44-47.
