NOTRE DAME, Ind. — A two-goal flurry in the final six minutes of the first half proved decisive Saturday, as Holy Cross held off IU Northwest men's soccer, 2-0, at Saints Field.
The RedHawks matched Holy Cross for long stretches in the opening half, with Carter Levesque turning away shot after shot in goal, stopping Daniel Alfaro, Victor Sanz Paz and Anthony Panayiotou to keep the match scoreless deep into the period. But the Saints broke through in the 39th minute when Mika Oberheim scored unassisted to put Holy Cross ahead, 1-0. Just over four minutes later, Cung Thawng doubled the lead, finishing off a Dominic Castillo assist to make it 2-0 at the half.
IU Northwest came out firing in the second half in search of a response. Luis Limones was relentless, firing five shots on the night and testing Holy Cross goalkeeper Sam Negus repeatedly, including a look that Oberheim had to clear off the line in the 56th minute. Gavin Niebel also tested Negus early in the match, but the Saints defense and goalkeeping held firm the rest of the way.
Levesque finished with eight saves in the loss, continuing to make things difficult for Holy Cross even after the Saints had built their two-goal cushion, with stops on Xavier Fox, Oberheim and Cliff Rwabira in the second half alone. Negus made five saves at the other end to preserve the shutout for Holy Cross.
The RedHawks had one final push in the closing minutes, with Cesar Lopez and Tye Adams each getting looks on goal, including a header from Adams in the 86th minute, but the Saints closed out the 2-0 win.
IU Northwest hits the road Tuesday, Oct. 20, to face Saint Xavier in Chicago, Ill. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CDT.
