As the digital economy expands, Northwest Indiana is emerging as a strategic location for data centers. Whether we realize it or not, artificial intelligence pervades our lives — every Google search, every phone app, every video we stream, every text, every bank transaction, even finding directions home on your cell phone uses AI. It is everywhere in our modern society. We have come to rely on AI as part of the quality of our lives; and we have an ever-increasing thirst for even more of it. It is the coming wave of incredible change in our world.
Data centers are the backbone of AI, cloud computing and advanced manufacturing systems. Data centers and their related investment have the potential to do what the steel industry did to transform the Region into an absolute economic powerhouse over 100 years ago in the early 1900s.
Our proximity to Chicago’s digital corridor, abundant power capacity and access to reliable water and transportation networks position the Region well to compete for this internationally prized opportunity.
That said, the success of any project depends not only on its technical and financial merits but on how it integrates with the surrounding community. Effective planning must address potential operational impacts, such as noise, water demand, energy demand and infrastructure alignment — issues that, if managed proactively, can transform potential points of friction into collaborative solutions.
Now is the time for local communities and the Region to identify viable, practical locations for this multi-billion-dollar opportunity for Northwest Indiana. The Northwest Indiana Forum is already working with business leaders and local communities on this effort. Good planning is essential for the long-term sustainable success of our Region.
Recent citizen concerns, flamed by misinformation and political agendas, must be respectfully vetted and addressed.
This opportunity won’t last forever. Let’s learn from some of the mistakes of our past and have Northwest Indiana become a national example for responsible, future-ready data infrastructure development for the benefit of our children and future generations.
