Franciscan Health Dyer has added a food locker to help the needy.
The hospital on U.S. 30 near the state line installed an OrderAhead food locker in partnership with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. People from food-insecure households can order food online to pick up at a specific time.
The goal is to improve access to healthy food for the chronically underserved.
“We are thankful to be able to further enhance our impactful partnership with the Food Bank with the addition of the food locker,” Franciscan Health Foundation Executive Director Rick Peltier said. “We are grateful for the support of our donors who helped make it possible.”
The 16-bay refrigerated locker sits outside of the hospital at 24 Joliet St. underneath the main entrance canopy. It's the seventh in Lake County.
Residents of both Northwest Indiana and Illinois will have 24/7 access to food, including produce, protein and grains. Two of the bays are reserved for first responders helping veterans or the Department of Child Services.
“For years, Franciscan Health and the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana have worked together to address food insecurity as a critical part of overall health,” said Victor Garcia, president and CEO of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. “The new OrderAhead Locker in Dyer strengthens that partnership, making it easier for patients and community members to access nutritious food and reinforcing our belief that nutrition is essential to quality medical care.”
It's part of a broader food insecurity program that Franciscan Health has partnered with the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana on. They also gave out food at Mobile Markets, Fresh Start Markets and via the Food Rx and Produce Prescription program.
The new lockers are stocked throughout the week. Franciscan Health Foundation expects to invest $43,200 a year to supply fresh, nutritious food to those in need.
